タイトル：Bacterial killers: The French fries connection
Abstract:
Numerous animal studies show the importance of predator–prey interactions for trophic web stability and species coexistence. Yet, microbial systems can provide unique perspectives on predatory interactions, and also present opportunities for useful applications. In this seminar I will present an approach to study bacterial predator-prey dynamics in-situ, using the bacterial predator Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus. Moreover, while B. bacteriovorus has been defined as an obligate predator, it spontaneously forms host-independent (H-I) variants which may alter the dynamics. The modulation of these phenotypes will constitute the second part of the seminar. We will conclude with the development of novel predator-containing carriers for countering bacterial plant pathogens.
