Director's Greetings

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a key infrastructure in the modern society and is based on modern electronic and photonic technologies. However, the growing amount of information causes a problem of increase in energy consumption. Moreover, when Society 5.0 proposed by Japanese government is realized, the amount of information is expected to further increase significantly. Therefore, the achievement of Society 5.0 requires development of emerging electronic and photonic technologies enabling energy-saving information processing and transmission.

Electronic and optical materials and technologies are used in various fields other than information processing and transmission. High magnetic field superconducting magnets, laser processing for hard-to-work materials, and chemical and biological sensing using light are the examples, and research on further improvement of those technologies has proceeded. In addition, quantum technologies have attracted increasing attention for ICT and sensing applications.

Research Institute for Advanced Electronics and Photonics promotes research and development of emerging electronic and photonic technologies, and their combined technologies for providing novel devices and systems that are unattainable by conventional technologies. We will contribute to realize safe, secure, and sustainable society through our research and development in collaborating with a broad range of partners inside and outside AIST. .
