Wood-based Composites Research Group
Our research focuses on wood-based materials, aiming to develop innovative technologies for industrial applications. We are working on the development of composite materials and forming technologies by utilizing the hierarchical structure of wood.
Group Research Theme
Composite materials utilizing the hierarchical structure of wood
Wood-based materials exhibit a multi-level hierarchical structure. For example, the cell wall has a composite structure in which tough crystalline cellulose is reinforced with amorphous polymers. By leveraging the rational hierarchical structure, we investigate composite technologies with other materials and apply chemical modifications to enhance the durability and functionality of wood-based materials. In parallel, we have developed techniques for evaluating their multi-scale structure, enabling research and development that accounts for the inherent heterogeneity of natural wood.

Wood plastic flow forming
We are developing a technology called "wood plastic flow forming," which enables the shaping of solid wood materials into various forms using common plastic forming methods. By applying resin impregnation or chemical modification to the wood before forming, we can enhance the durability of the final product to meet specific requirements. We seek to apply this technique in various industries as a viable replacement for conventional plastics. We are also working on multi-material technologies that utilize the plastic flow of wood to achieve strong bonding with different materials.
