My name is Deivasigamani Prabhakaran, from India. I obtained my doctorate degree from IIT-Madras and subsequently worked as a post doctoral trainee in GE, Polymers. Currently, I am working in AIST, Tohoku, as a JSPS researcher. My area of research is to develop simple but smart visual ion sensors for environmental analysis. Our research focus is on fabricating molecular film based sensors using Langmuir-Blodgett technique, for in-situ and onsite measurements at a cheaper price. Also, we plan to expand our research on chromatography for analyzing environmental toxins.

| My stay in Japan, especially in AIST has been pleasant so for with excellent support and cooperation from co-staffs. The working atmosphere is really wonderful and productive, which brings in the feeling for achieving for great goals. The culture of Japan and its heritage are really amazing and outstanding. Learning Japanese has always been a passion for me and I thrive to master it at the earliest possible of my ability. My experience in this country will always be a special feeling in my hearty to rejoice .

■ 私はインド出身の デイバシガマニ プラバカランです。私はマドラス工科大学で学位取得後、引き続きGE Polymersで博士研究員をしていました。現在は、AIST東北センターでJSPSフェローをしています。私の研究課題は環境分析のための簡素で洗練された化学センサーの開発です。研究の中心はラングミュア・ブロジェット分子膜に基づくセンサーの創製と、その場あるいは現場測定を可能とする計測チップ材料への応用です。クロマトグラフ分離の応用も予定しています。
日本での生活環境、特にAISTでの環境は、共同研究者の皆さんの協力と手助けを頂いて大変快適です。研究環境は特にすばらしく、また建設的で、きっと何かすばらしい研究成果が得られるのではないかという予感がします。日本の文化や歴史的遺産には大変驚き、目を見張るものがあります。ずっと日本語を勉強したいと思っており、もっと習得してできるだけ早く使えるようになりたいと思って い ます。ここでの私の経験は、いつも心から楽しんでいけるものと思います。

My name is Adel Ismail. I am from Egypt. I am working a researcher in Central Metallurgical Research and Development Institute, Nanostructured materials department. The main goal of my research is synthesis of nanoparticles oxides and mixed oxides via sol ? gel method such as TiO 2 , ZnO, SiO 2 and V 2 O 5 etc. for environmental applications. I have joined AIST in the Specific-Field Analysis Team last year. Nowadays, I am working in optical sensors with significant naked-eye detection for toxic metals that basically do not require any special techniques. I have found the very excellent facilities of AIST T ohoku which helped me to get very interesting research and clear interpretation. In addition, I have found very good coop-eration from coworkers especially from my boss Dr. Matsunaga.

| In addition to opportunities of doing research, I and my family are enjoying to see new culture like Japanese culture such as Japanese language, tea ceremony and arrangement flowers. |
■ 私は エジプト出身の アデル イズマイルです。私はエジプト中央金属精錬研究所のナノ構造材料部に所属しています。そこでの私の研究の主たる目標は、TiO 2 , ZnO, SiO 2 あるいはV 2 O 5 などの酸化物やそれらの混合酸化物ナノ粒子の合成とその環境分野への応用です。私は昨年から特異場制御計測チームに所属し、最近は、特別な装置を必要としない有害金属イオンの目視検出用化学センサーの開発を行っています。ここAIST東北センターには、すばらしい設備がそろっており、そのため、非常に興味深い研究と解析を行うことができます。さらに、指導者の松永さんを始め、すばらしい同僚に恵まれて い ます。
研究活動のほかに、家族とともに日本語の勉強や茶道、生け花などの日本の文化も新鮮な気持ちで楽しんで い ます。
