My name is Zhengbin Xia, from Guangzhou city, south of China. I obtained my doctor degree of Chemical Engineering from South China University of Technology, and then worked in this university as a n associate professor until I came to Japan. Now as a JSPS fellow, I am working at developing an atomic-scale flattened surface on Ti by using electrochemical method, which brought me into a wonderful nanoscale and atomic world. This project could not be completed without the powerful support from H. Nanjo, M. Nishioka, M. Fujimu r a and other coworkers. I would like to thank all staff of the Research Center for Compact Chemical Process for their friendly and kindly helps, especially for my host researcher Dr. H. Nanjo, who gave me this opportunity and guided me during the all experimental process with his perpetual good spirits and fruitful advices.

| During I lived in Sendai, I am deeply attracted by its novel clean, neat, safe and friendly style . It was easy to find c ommon ground between China and Japan, such as language and calligraphy, ancient architectural structures, traditional civilization, C hinese traditional medicine, and people ' s color and character, etc, so I am an advocate and optimist of friendly relations between China and Japan .

■ 中国の南、広州市出身の夏 正斌（シャ ゼンビン）です。南中国工科大学で化学工学の博士号を取得し、日本に来るまで同大学の準教授をしていました。現在は JSPS フェローとして、電気化学的手法によるチタン表面の原子レベル平坦化の研究をしています。この技術開発は私を魅力的なナノスペースや原子レベルの世界に導いてくれています。本研究は南條さん、西岡さん、藤村君をはじめとする仲間達から多くのご協力を得て推進しています。また、コンパクト化学プロセス研究センターの皆様の親切で優しいご協力にも感謝しています。特に受入研究者の南條さんには JSPS 共同研究の機会を与えていただき、また、熱い研究姿勢と実り多いアドバイスを伴った実験方法を提案していただき感謝しています。仙台に住んで、そのきれいで、整然としていて、安全で親切な街に深く感銘を受けていますし、言葉、書道、昔の建造物、文明、漢方薬、人種、個性など多くの点で中国と日本における共通基盤を容易に見つけることができます。このようなわけで、私は中国と日本の親密な関係を唱えるとともに、両国の友好を信じています。

My name is Natarajan Sathiyamoorthy Venkataramanan. I ' m from India, living in Japan with my wife. I obtained by Ph.D degree from Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, India. After two years of stay in Taiwan as Post doctoral Fellow in Academia Sinica, Taipei, I came to Japan to work with Dr. Y. Ikushima. My area of research includes synthesis of Organic carbonates in supercritical carbondioxide, especially on the synthesis of industrially valuable carbonate by the chemical fixation of CO 2 . The other areas of interest are on synthesis of nanoparticles and metal oxides by an environmental benign method.
I like the work culture here and would appreciate the generous, timely help of people ' s render to me. Japan ' s beautiful mountains covered with green provide ' s inspiration and it refresh my minds.

| I and my wife enjoyed the sakura season by watching flowers. We visited M a tsushima and mountain covered with snow in spring and enjoyed their beauty. I am learning Japanese now, and it ' s very interesting and ex c iting. I like the dedicated hearts towards work with lots of humanity.

■ 私の名前はナタラジャン・ヴェンカタラマナンです。私はインド生まれで、現在は妻と共に日本に住んでいます。私は、母国のマドゥライ カマラジェ大学で博士号を取得しました。その後、台北の中央研究院でポスドクとして２年間過ごした後、2005年に産総研コンパクト化学プロセス研究センターで生島豊博士と働くために日本にきました。私の研究分野は超臨界二酸化炭素中で、二酸化炭素の化学固定化による工業的に重要な炭酸エステルを合成することです。また、環境に優しい方法による金属ナノ粒子や金属酸化物の合成にも取り組んでいます。私は、当チームの研究に対する姿勢が気に入っていますし、周囲の方の寛大で、折よい援助に感謝しております。新緑でおおわれた日本の美しい山々の景色を日々眺めると気分転換にもなります。とくに、花見の時期は美しい桜を見ながら妻と共に楽しみました。また、春には松島や雪でおおわれた山を訪れ、その美しさに感動しました。私は、今日本語を習っていますが、とても興味深くエキサイティングです。研究にも一生懸命取り組むつもりです。
