In recent years, risk assessment tools that take substance transport into account have been made publicly available, including those for the management of soil containing naturally occurring heavy metals and under the Soil Contamination Countermeasures Act. As a result, risk assessment has become a common concept in Japan as well, aimed at implementing rational soil contamination countermeasures. However, to understand and properly use these tools, it is important to learn the fundamentals. In this lecture, participants will learn the basics of risk assessment and communication and engage in practical exercises.
*This session is open to participants who did not attend Session 1.

The 7th Geosphere Sustainability Evaluation Research Seminar
“2nd Workshop on Sustainable Soil Management”

It is extremely important to explore sustainable countermeasures for various geosphere environmental issues, such as soil containing naturally occurring heavy metals—which can be generated by nuclear disasters or construction sites—and mine wastewater from abandoned or decommissioned mines. In particular, it is necessary to consider not only environmental aspects but also social and economic aspects.
For this workshop, we have invited Mr. Paul Bardos, Co-chair of SuRF (Sustainable Remediation Forum) – UK, to give a presentation on the latest trends in Sustainable Remediation in the United Kingdom. We will also present research examples from AIST being conducted under the Comprehensive Environmental Promotion Fund (SⅡ-9-3).

Date and Time:
Thursday, November 2, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Location:
AIST Tokyo Headquarters, 10th Floor, METI Annex, Large Conference Room (first 20 attendees) and online
