JIS A 1231 Upflow Column Permeation Test
and
Study Session on the Standardization of Leaching and Adsorption Tests

　JIS A 1231, “Up-flow Column Percolation Test Method for Determining Leaching Characteristics of Geotechnical Materials,” was published by the Japanese Standards Association in March 2023 as a new leaching test method. This standard is based on ISO 21268-3 “Up-flow percolation test,” which was published in 2019. The Japan Geotechnical Society and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) have been working on standardizing this as a translated JIS, with the original draft prepared by these organizations.
　Therefore, we have invited Dr. Ute Kalbe from the German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung, BAM) to host a study session on JIS A 1231 and leaching and adsorption tests. Dr. Kalbe has been actively involved in the standardization of leaching tests within ISO/TC 190 Soil Quality and CEN/TC 444 Environmental Characterization. She also provided significant support for the standardization of the ISO 21268-3 column percolation test.

　During the study session, after an overview of JIS A1231, Mr. Kalbe will give a presentation on the standardization of leaching tests and measures for new regulated substances such as PFAS. Furthermore, we would like to introduce the test methods and guidance for standardizing the acquisition of parameters related to leaching and adsorption—which Japan proposed to ISO/TC 190 in October 2023, regarding the standardization of test methods and guidance for determining parameters related to leaching and adsorption.
　We also plan to hold a tour of the laboratories at AIST’s Geosphere Resources and Environment Research Division during the morning of the event. We look forward to your participation.
