2011 Off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake

We express our sincerest sympathy for all sufferers of the 11 March 2011 Off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku earthquake. Since a few years ago, the Active Fault and Earthquake Research Center (AFERC) had been engaged in the study of the Jogan earthquake tsunami that struck the Sendai Plain in 869 and had published part of the results. We are extremely regretful that a huge seismic disaster took place before our research achievements could ever be reflected in disaster countermeasures. We are feeling acute helplessness at the immense damages incurred by Miyagi and Fukushima Prefectures, where our surveys have been assisted by kind cooperation of many benevolent people. We cordially hope that the affected regions will again be home, as they once were, to beautiful pastoral landscapes and lively townscapes. We look squarely at the present situation and continue to do our utmost to promote research that can truly contribute to earthquake disaster prevention.
