Situation of damage by the earthquake and recovery of our section

We at length standards section express deep condolences to those victimized by off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake. We hope for the fast recovery of the affected area.

Worldwide sympathy from our friends is most sincerely appreciated.


Some facilities and equipments were damaged, therefore calibration services and research activities have been halted. The recovery efforts are the most urgent task. We appreciate your cooperation. We are going to recover the contribution to the industry via the calibration services, research activities, and industry-academia-government collaborations.

The affects on the activities of our section by the earthquake are described below.

Situation of damage

  • No one at length standards section was injured. There were no major injuries at AIST.
  • Although the earthquake occurred during the meeting of Length Club, every participant was safely evacuated.
  • Some facilities and equipments were damaged, therefore calibration services and research activities have been halted. We are checking the facilities and equipments.

Situation of recovery

  • We at National Metrology Institute of Japan has started the recovery of infrastructures such as electricity, water supply, and information systems. Recovery efforts of calibration services is underway.
  • Recovery efforts of research activities will be started after that of calibration services.
