Scientific understanding of the manufacturing process to create an optimal process chain that achieves the required functionality

About Us

The Core Manufacturing Technology Research Institute (CMT‑RI) of AIST develops foundational technologies that support the future of MONODZUKURI (manufacturing). Building on a long heritage dating back to the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory founded in 1937, we advance processing technologies and integrate digital innovation to meet rapidly evolving industrial needs. In response to global trends such as carbon neutrality, the circular economy, and the rise of DX and AI, we pursue research that drives manufacturing innovation and strengthens the technological foundations for the next generation.

Greeting

The Core Manufacturing Technology Research Institute (CMT-RI) is dedicated to creating and implementing foundational technologies that support next-generation MONODZUKURI (manufacturing), in response to the rapid changes facing industry and society. Megatrends such as population aging and decline, carbon neutrality, the circular economy, and the advancement of digital transformation (DX) and artificial intelligence (AI) are driving unprecedented innovation in manufacturing environments. Anticipating these transformations, our division aims to present a vision for the future of manufacturing by integrating advanced processing technologies with digital innovations to generate new value.

Our institute is built upon the concept of the "manufacturing process chain," which integrates design, processing, and evaluation. Based on this framework, we actively adopt data-driven approaches to problem-solving. By leveraging the expertise of our research groups in areas such as additive manufacturing, surface functionalization, advanced coatings, and laser processing, we strive to create distinctive and innovative technologies through ingenuity and collaboration.

As the global transition toward a circular economy accelerates, remanufacturing - restoring products and components to maximize their value - has gained increasing attention as a cornerstone of sustainable manufacturing. Our division is committed to establishing a scientific foundation that integrates lifecycle design, remanufacturing processes, and performance assurance. At the same time, we promote the social implementation of remanufacturing through collaboration with industry. Through these efforts, we aim to build a new manufacturing ecosystem that achieves both resource circulation and industrial competitiveness.

We place strong emphasis on delivering research outcomes to society. Through collaboration among academia, industry, and government, as well as active participation in standardization activities, we promote the practical application and dissemination of our technologies. Furthermore, by strengthening international collaboration in light of global technological and societal trends, we strive to create world-class manufacturing technologies. Working together with diverse stakeholders, we will shape a new vision for manufacturing networks and contribute to enhancing industrial competitiveness for the next generation.
