Bioinformatics investigates the mechanisms of complex biological phenomena using an information science approach, and provides information technology to researchers in the life sciences. Recent technological advances have increased the variety and amount of life sciences data and highlighted the importance of bioinformatics. In particular, new generation sequencing technologies demand ultra-fast sequence analysis, and have changed the approach to research in the life sciences from hypothesis-driven to data-driven. Although computer speed has not kept pace with the explosion of biological data, bioinformatics must fill the gaps. |
