Sustainable Remediation コンソーシアム
SuRF-JAPAN
Sustainable remediation (SR) is a balanced decision-making process that aims to maximize the
overall environmental, social and economic benefits from the activities associated with
remediation of contaminated sites. The SR goal can be achieved through comprehensive
consideration of various indicators related to environmental, social and economic aspects,
and selecting the best practices or optimizing remedy techniques with various
stakeholders.
In Japan, pioneered by a few public organizations, such as the National Institute of
Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and the Bureau of Environment, Tokyo
Metropolitan Government, Geo-Environmental Protection Center (GEPC), as well as a few
consulting companies, discussion and studies on SR have been recently started.
Experts from AIST and industrial sector in Japan have been involved in the ISO/TC 190
activities related to standardization of SR through committees of the Japanese Geotechnical
Society and Geo-Environmental Protection Center.
To provide a platform for a deeper discussion on SR, exchanging professional knowledge,
enhancing R & D, and joining international organizations, the SR Consortium has been
established in Japan.
The SR consortium is now working as SuRF-JAPAN.
