Development of an effective treatment method to prevent scarring
A research group led by research group leader Yasuyuki Kida collaborated with Yukiko Imai, a graduate student at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, University of Tsukuba, to develop a new treatment for the prevention of scar contracture that occurs after trauma. This study showed the possibility that the culture supernatant of adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs), which are cells for regenerative medicine, can be applied as a preventive measure against scar contracture that occurs after trauma. To date, there have been no studies focusing on excessive wound contraction that occurs during wound healing, and it has been difficult to reproduce the formation process of human scar contracture as an experimental model. Therefore, the research group developed a human scar contracture experiment model using a fibroblast-populated collagen lattice (FPCL) model derived from patient scars. They also showed that the addition of a conditioned supernatant of ASCs suppressed the contraction of this patient-derived FPCL model. It is expected that identifying the molecular targets responsible for the action of ASCs will lead to the discovery of effective drugs for the prevention of scar contracture.
