Yes, microwave effect is real!:Study of microwave effect for HT1 enzymatic hydrolysis under irradiation of different frequency and consideration of the mechanism in molecular level

We have revealed microwave effect for HT1 reaction, thermostable enzyme to hydrolysis of glycosyl bond, and considered reaction mechanism in molecular level.

In a reaction by glucosidase HT1, which has a relatively higher optimum temperature as 60°C, we compared the results by four different heating methods (conventional incubator heating and 2.45 GHz, 400MHz and 5.8GHz microwave irradiation). We, then, found that the reaction is accelerated when the conductive loss occurs. Based on this, the microwave effect at the molecular level in chemical reactions was proposed as ions selective activation by microwave related with accelerating the reaction.

Although special effects of microwave for reactions tends to be denied, this research would be an experimental and theoretical study to show microwave effects. The article was published in Biosci. Biotechnol. Biochem. and the graphical abstract was adopted as the cover image of the journal as Editor's Choice.
