Applied Molecular Function Research Group Overview

The need for precision control technology for the utilization of cells has been growing rapidly. In addition, there is a need to understand the structure and function of glycoproteins, which are biomolecules that control biological functions, and to efficiently produce molecules with optimal structures. We have established a number of elemental technologies for manipulating cells at will and for producing, functionalizing, and analyzing glycoproteins, and are conducting research on their application and practical use.

Project 1:Technology to manipulate cells and tissues with artificial materials
Researcher: SUMARU Kimio, TERAMURA Yuji, TAKAGI Toshiyuki, SANO Masayuki, YOSHIHARA Erika

We have developed technologies for sequencing, sorting, and designing cultured cells as desired using functional polymers; for cell reprogramming and functional expression analysis using sustained expression RNA vectors; and for fluorinated lipids, which are expected to be deployed for functionalization of cells.

Project 2:Technology to produce and analyze glycoproteins
Researcher: KAMEYAMA Akihiko, ASADA Masahiro, YOKO-O Takehiko

We have developed a new membrane electrophoresis method that enables precise analysis of mucins, which are giant glycoproteins. We have also created special yeast and cell lines and developed a technology to produce useful glycoproteins using these yeast and cells.

Project 3:Analysis and modification of water-biomolecular systems using sub-THz waves.
Researcher: IMASHIMIZU Masahiko

Molecular functions generated by the water-biomolecule system involve the heterogeneity of water dynamics and slow relaxation processes due to hydration. Based on the observation and control of the hydration, we are developing technologies with broad applications across various fields, including biotechnology. We have revealed that sub-THz waves can be utilized for this control.
