Honda R&D-AIST Diamond×Electronics Cooperative Research Laboratory
Honda will establish a diamond semiconductor hub capable of seamless integration from exploring challenges in new application fields to foundational and applied research, through open innovation with partner companies and academia. This initiative prioritizes rapid productization and market readiness under Honda's leadership.
Essential Semiconductor Materials for 2050
As we advance toward 2050, considered a critical milestone for a sustainable
society, the electrification of mobility and all manner of “things” is
accelerating. Research and development of wide bandgap semiconductor devices,
represented by SiC and GaN, has been progressing. Recently, research into
ultra-wide bandgap semiconductors, possessing even wider bandgaps, has
become increasingly active. Among these, diamond surpasses other semiconductor
materials in multiple critical areas: it combines the high breakdown voltage
characteristics (barrier performance index) required for power semiconductors
with the high-frequency characteristics (Johnson performance index) demanded
for RF semiconductors. It also offers superior thermal conductivity and
exceptional performance in harsh environments (high temperatures, high
radiation). Furthermore, diamond possesses unique physical properties,
such as a low dielectric constant, positioning it as the ultimate next-generation
power/electronic semiconductor material with the potential to expand semiconductor
capabilities. Honda R&D Co., Ltd. and the AIST Group, recognizing
the ultimate potential and uniqueness of diamond semiconductors, aim to
achieve societal implementation in new domains and new-value mobility through
integrated R&D spanning substrates, devices, and packaging technologies.
Simultaneously, they seek to contribute to reducing overall societal power
consumption. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
Despite the many challenges still facing diamond semiconductors, we are
pleased to establish a冠 lab (collaborative research laboratory) with Honda
R&D as a strong partner. Together, we will advance from fundamental
research toward practical applications while building a hub for open innovation.
By combining AIST's 30 years of diamond semiconductor technology with Honda
R&D's practical implementation expertise, we will pursue research and
development to deliver new insights back to society.
