About Us

The main mission of the force and torque standards group is to establish, improve and maintain the national standards of force and torque, which have been developed by NMIJ and NRLM (the former NMIJ). We also maintain the international equality of force and torque units with other countries. Finally, we steadfastly disseminate the national standards to the industry.

We establish and strengthen the traceability of measurement in the force field (from force standard machines to force measuring devices and then, force testing machines), and in the torque field (from torque standard machines to torque measuring devices and then, torque testing machines). We investigate to solve the problems concerned with the traceability of measurements, such as the development of precise and stable force and torque transducers, the development of effective calibration and measurement techniques of force and torque, and the development of force and torque standards realizing them more precisely and more stably using different principles.

Force and Torque Standards in Japan

National Torque Standard

Research themes

Developing and improving in national force standard

We are developing tuning-fork type force transducers with good long-term stability in sensitivity in comparison with conventional strain-gauge type ones.

Developing and improving in national torque standard

We are studying to expand the low range of the torque standard, and developing high accuracy torque transducers required for disseminating the torque standard.

Research and development for torque calibration technique using electromagnetic force

We are studying the torque generating method using electromagnetic force, and developing an electromagnetic force type torque standard machine based on this principle.

Research and development for evaluation of multi component force and torque sensor

We are developing evaluation method of multi-component force and torque sensors with imparting combinations of force and torque simultaneously.
