Greeting from the Director

Director
Yoshiki Shimizu ,
Director, Research Institute

NMRI was established on April 1, 2015 with the mission of substantial contribution to the industrial application of nanomaterials. To achieve its goals, NMRI works on nano-carbon materials for devices such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene, as well as on nanoparticles and nanoscale thin films, aiming at the development of new materials and devices that will play important roles in solving energy and environmental issues. These include those to be used for the highly efficient utilization of energy and recovering useful resources.

Evolution of nanotechnology has realized rapid progress of nanoscale measurements and materials technologies. Ceramics and functional chemical products, into which nanotechnologies are introduced, have achieved remarkable advancements.

On the other hand, although nanomaterials represented by CNTs and graphene show great promise for device applications and other purposes, they have yet to be widely used because of the high production cost and difficulty in their handling, with only a few exceptions including titanium dioxide nanoparticles. We believe that realizing the industrial application of these nanomaterials is essential to the solution of current energy and environmental issues.

NMRI distinguishes itself as a platform for collaboration between materials science and computational science researchers. Making the most of this strength, we strive to develop basic and application technologies of nanomaterials, including production of high-quality nano-carbons for devices, large-area processing techniques, and separation of CNTs. We also address the fine structural control, integration, and lamination of nanoparticles and nanoscale thin films. Furthermore, we engage ourselves in close mutual cooperation to create new materials on the basis of advanced measurement and processing techniques as well as theory and computer simulations.

For the realization of the industrial application of nanomaterials, collaboration with industries and other sectors is essential. We are strongly seeking the promotion of cooperation among industries, universities, and the government. All the members of NMRI are determined to carry out the resolution to advance research and development. We would sincerely appreciate kind guidance and support from all related parties.
