Abstract

Nonylphenol ethoxylates are widely used as nonionic surface active substance for many industrial usages. Because of their ecotoxicological characteristics, nonylphenols and their related substances are examined in view of hazard assessment done by several national and international institutes.

In particular, direct load of nonylphenol to aquatic system has been worrying about up to the present. To reduce the exposed concentration to aquatic biota or the intake quantity for human, we set up three kinds of alternatives.

They are introducing alternative substances, source reduction and end of pipe technologies. Actually, some industrial sectors in Japan have begun to take a voluntary action for substituting nonylphenol ethoxylates.
