Outreach Activities in November
CRM participated to the 1st Workshop on Risk Analysis
by ILSI Japan

On November 15, CRM research scientists, Drs. Kyoko Ono and Isamu Ogura presented their research on environmental risk assessment of cadmium and coplanar-PCB, respectively at the 1st workshop on Risk Analysis organized by Japan Branch of International Life Science Institute (ILSI) in Tokyo, Japan.

Founded in 1978, the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) is a nonprofit, worldwide foundation that seeks to improve the well-being of the general public through the pursuit of balanced science. Its goal is to further the understanding of scientific issues relating to nutrition, food safety, toxicology, risk assessment, and the environment by bringing together scientists from academia, government, and industry.

The 1st workshop on risk analysis was organized having Dr. Penelope Fenner-Crisp, Executive Director of Risk Science Institute, one of the research institutes under ILSI Research Foundation for the purpose of assessing the needs for risk assessment training in Japan to improve food safety. RSI has been engaged in researches to improve methodologies and techniques for chemical risk assessment in collaboration with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Health Canada as well as to implementing global risk assessment training with international organizations including FAO and WHO.

Majority of the workshop participants were those who engaged in food safety or chemical safety in food industries or at regulatory agencies. The presentations by Drs. Ogura and Ono were very well accepted and evoked great interests among the audience, as Coplanar-PCB and Cadmium are possible contaminants in foods.

In the panel discussion, we had heated discussions on the needs to develop expertise for risk analysis, in scope of having the new independent organization planned to be established next year under Cabinet Office for risk assessment to ensure food safety.

ILSI Japan is aiming to develop risk analysis training program starting in 2003, and further contribution of CRM to the ILSI Japan program is expected.
