The First CRM/AIST & AED/USEPA Workshop
On Risk Assessment and Risk Management for Chemicals

The first CRM/AIST and AED/USEPA Workshop was held on June 28th and 29th at AIST in Tsukuba, having Dr. Wayne R. Munns, Jr.*, Associate Director for Science, Atlantic Ecology Division (AED), Office of Research and Development, National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory, the US EPA. At the workshop, there were active discussions on the latest topics (, either of them is OK, but for the coincidence with Japanese sentence) relative to risk assessment and management for chemical substances.

The purpose of this workshop was to facilitate further research interactions between AED/USEPA and CRM/AIST which have been developed through the exchange of research information at the international science society meetings including SETAC (Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry). On the first day of the workshop, Dr. Munns introduced the current research activities and future directions at AED, and CRM introduced the ongoing NEDO project in CRM and results of the recently complete risk assessment on nonylphenols. Discussions at the workshop were focused on the needs for conducting population-level risk assessment for ecological risk assessment, and for integration of human and ecological risk assessments. On the second day, an individual meeting was held between Dr. Munns and each research team at CRM to discuss possibilities research interactions in specific areas of interests for both AED/USEPA and CRM/AIST.

*Wayne R. Munns, Jr., Ph.D.
Dr. Munns is engaged in research activities for development and application of ecological risk assessment for practical chemical management. Also, he has been taking leadership in the area of ecological risk assessment in the activities at SETAC. Currently, Dr. Munns is Associate Director for Science, Atlantic Ecology Division, National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory Office of Research and Development, US Environmental Protection Agency.

In the interview with Dr. Munns, he also talked about the activities of AED toward the integration of ecological and human risk assessments, and further integration of risk assessment with socio-economic analysis.
