The Research Institute for Physical Measurement improves and disseminates Japanese measurement standards for electricity, electromagnetic waves, frequencies, temperature, light, and other physical phenomena. These standards contribute to a number of industries, including energy and electric/electronic equipment. It also develops measurement and evaluation technology related to such physical phenomena. In addition, the institute promotes the development of time standards based on optical lattice clocks, electric current standards based on a single electron pumps, and next-generation standards for thermodynamic temperatures and other measurements.
