■ 演 題:Auditory streaming in the songbird: neural representation and behavior.

<概 要>

Segregating or integrating sounds from multiple sources is a crucial task of the auditory system for survival.

For studying the mechanism of auditory scene analysis, sequences of two alternating tones are commonly used as stimuli (ABA-, A and B being different tones, - indicating a longer temporal gap).

When successive sounds with different features such as frequency or temporal pattern are presented, they are integrated into one stream or segregated in separate streams according to their perceptual similarity.

Although it has been suggested that segregated streams are represented by separate populations of neurons in brain, how those separate sounds are represented in the auditory system still remains unclear.

Segregation by complex sounds such as sinusoidally amplitude modulated tones or harmonic complexes is especially of great interest since their excitation patterns are similar.
Here, our present study shows the neuronal representation of segregated and integrated complex sounds in the songbird forebrain.

Multiunit recording in the European starling (Sturnus vulgaris), which auditory system shows similar spectral and temporal resolutions to that in human, will provide the neural correlate of human psychophysical observations
of this phenomenon.

Behavioral and neurophysiological simultaneous observation to yield a direct comparison within the same species is also briefly introduced.
