Charge transfer excited state (3CT) of Ru(II) polypyridine complexes are efficiently quenched by a Co(III) polypyridine complex in solution. In these cases, ET reaction rate in the quenching can be evaluated from the calculated unimolecular rate and the fraction of ET reaction in the quenching. There is the probability that other kind of quenching than ET takes place for either less exoergonic ET or non-adiabatic ET. The present work has been carried out to reveal the mechanism of emission qenching process of 3Ru(bpydc)34- by the CoL33+ (L = 2,2'-bipyridine, 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine, ethylenediamine, etc.) by using transient absorption spectroscopy and life-time measurement of emission.
