Mechanoluminescent mechanisms of an Europium Complex Crystal

Mechanoluminescence(ML) is light emission caused by mechanical stimuli such as grinding,
cutting and so on. In this study, we used crystals of europium complex that showed strong red-ML and
estimated ML excitation mechanisms. ML-image at the very moment of cleaving was visualized by ICCD
camera for the first time. We found that it is important for ML to possess piezoelectric properties.
