A new application of thermally stimulated currents (TSCs) was developed, which can be used to analyze generation, recombination, and separation of ion-pairs in layered organic photoconductors (OPCs) containing azo and hydrazone compounds. The amount of collected carriers was measured varying the condition of the irradiation (temperature, electric field) and the current measurement (electric field). Generation, recombination and separation processes of ion-pairs were analyzed by comparing temperature and/or electric field dependence of carrier generation efficiency among the layered OPC samples. The OPC sample using the high sensitive unsymmetrical azo pigment had higher quantum efficiency of ion-pair generation than the OPC sample using the symmetrical azo pigment when the same CTM was used in the samples. The OPC sample using the more mobile CTM had higher quantum efficiency of ion-pair generation than the OPC sample using the less mobile CTM when the same azo pigment was used.
