Toward the isolation and characterization of reactive
intermediate, naphthyne, 1,2-naphthalenedicarboxylic
anhydride was photolyzed in argon matrix at 11 K.
Wavelength-selective irradiation using THG of YAG laser
(355 nm) and high pressure Hg lamp through monochromator
(310 nm) caused stepwise decarboxylation and decarbonylation.
Observed product by the photolysis was assigned to
1,2-naphthyne (1,2-didehydronaphthalene) based on vibrational
spectrum calculated by density functional methods.
This 1,2-naphthyne reacted easily with CO in the matrix and
formed benzocyclopentadienylideneketene. For the comparison,
photolysis of 2,3-naphthalenedicarboxylic anhydride was also
studied.
