Photocatalytic decomposition of water into H2 and O2 over some tantalates

Science university of Tokyo

LiTaO3, NaTaO3 and KTaO3 were prepared in the presence of exess alkali in order to prevent from the formation of defects by the volatilization of alkali and to obtain good crystallinity. These alkali tantalates showed high activities for decomposition of water into H2 and O2 without any co-catalysts. The activity of NaTaO3 was drastically increased by loading NiO without pretreatment. The quantum yield of the NiO(0.05wt%)/NaTaO3 photocatalyst was 28% for the water decomposition at 270nm. SrTa2O6 and BaTa2O6 powder prepared by a flux method also showed the high activity. Sr2Ta2O7 prepared by a solid state reaction also showed activity. The activities of these alkali earth tantalate photocatalysts were drastically increased by loading NiO.
