Tsuyosi Takata, Michikazu Hara, Junko N. Kondo, Kazunari Domen abstract: We have studied the application of some ion-exchangeable layered materials to photocatalytic decomposition of water. Among them, it was found that a series of ion-exchangeable layered perovskite type oxides, A2-xLa2Ti3-xNbxO10 (A = K, Rb, Cs; x = 0, 0.5, 1.0), are highly efficient photocatalysts for overall water splitting when a proper amount of nickel was loaded. These materials show spontaneous hydration of interlayer space and decomposed intercalated H2O molecules into H2 and O2 under the band gap irradiation.
