Photothermal Signal Detection on the Optical Waveguide

We have investigated photothermal signal detection on the optical waveguide. We proposed a new technique to analyze the small area on the surface by photothermal signal detection using optical pumping. The key points are (i) to use thin core layer of waveguide as the media where a probe beam passes and (ii) to fabricate the whole system small to enhance thermal signal. We compare the glass and PMMA waveguide at various chopping frequencies, and explain why the photothermal signal is enhanced. On the basis of the results, we would like to propose several ideas how to design the sensitive surface analytical system.
