Laser ablation of aromatic azide in an inert matrix at cryogenic temperature

NIMC

Excimer laser ablation of pentafluorophenylazide was investigated in an inert matrix film at 8-10 K. A large amount of pentafluorophenylnitrene was ejected explosively as fragments from the matrix by the ablation. The photolysis of the azide was followed by UV, IR absorption spectroscopy, and optical emission spectroscopy. It was found that the plume of the matrix film was useful for the surface chemical modification of polymers. Surface analysis of the materials by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that the nitrene was chemically immobilized on the surface.
