DAILAB Activities - A QUICK LOOK

DBT-AIST International Laboratory for Advanced Biomedicine DAILAB

DAILAB (DBT-AIST International Laboratory for Advanced Biomedicine) was established under the comprehensive MoU between AIST and DBT at Biomedical Research Institute, Tsukuba campus of National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science & Technology (AIST), Japan on Oct 3, 2013. Marked as first International laboratory in Life Sciences & Biotechnology, DAILAB has become a role model of international research cooperation.

Highlights of DAILAB activities are

  • (i) Conduct basic to applied research on disease prevention and therapeutics for increasing the Quality of Life (with focus on old age)
  • (ii) Offer research training to young International students
  • (iii) Networking among researchers for fundamental and cutting edge research
  • (iv) Endeavor global frontage of both the institutions.

Besides that DAILAB has published 40 original research papers in peer reviewed journals, its unique activities have been impressively motivating and inspiring for young researchers. Some of these listed as follows are

DAILAB-STAR Program

DAILAB launched a STAR (Student Training for Advanced Research) Program since April 2014, and has been offering training in an International and highly organized environment for a period of 3 months to a year. Several young researchers have been benefited and many are currently enrolled in this program. Some of them have opted to stay in Japan for long term degree courses.

DAILAB-DACTOR Program

In order to Develop Application and Clinical Trial Oriented Research, DAILAB launched DACTOR program. It offers an excellent opportunity for students and young researchers to meet medical doctors, academia & industry experts from diverse disciplines so that the broad innovative aspects of research could be conceived and discussed.

DAILAB-CAFÉ

Dailabcafe (Classroom for Advanced & Frontier Education)- Held once in about 6 weeks, DAILAB-CAFÉ provides relaxed CAFÉ-like environment for study and learning. It features an informal CAFÉ like atmosphere and free interaction over tea/coffee and snacks. Frontier topics selected for CAFÉ talks are presented on an educational level, and are being skyped to overseas institutions including IIT-Delhi and Manipal University, India; Peking Union Medical College Tsinghua University, China; Hanyang University, Korea; Brawijaya University, Indonesia and University of Jayaverdenpura, Sri Lanka. Seventeen series of CAFÉ have been held so far.

DAILAB CAFÉ-PLUS (Presentation-Learning for Young Scholars)

DAILAB has been holding a new forum of CAFÉ called CAFÉ-PLUS with an aim is to offer chance to Young Scholars to present their work and train them for “Clear, Crisp, Careful and Concise” presentations. First round of four CAFÉ-PLUS series and CAFÉ-EXPRESS (EXtraordinary PREsentor Selection Series) finale in which four winners competed leading to a selection of grand winner (Shiyoni Datta, IIT-Delhi) were successfully completed. The grand winner was invited to DAILAB Japan.

PIKNIKH (Platform for Innovating Knowledge to International Know Hows)

PIKNIKH Initiated as a new forum of informal scientific meetings/symposia/sessions to be held in Japan and overseas to promote direct personal interactions, interdisciplinary thinking, innovating opportunities and to reach remote areas in India and the worl, DAILAB has completed XVI series of PIKNIKHs that were thoroughly enjoyed.

DAILAB TENJI (Technology Exhibits & Networking to Jump to Innovation/Industrialization)

pic1 DAILAB has been joining and assisting DBT, BIRAC and C-CAMP for technology exhibits at Tokyo Big Sight Japan.

Imaging Workshops

pic2 DAILAB has been conducting one-week full residential training workshop for bioimaging that ranged from the principles of light microscopy to high-resolution imaging instructed by AIST experts with assistance from Nikon, Olympus, Zeiss and ATTO Corporations. Four annual workshops have been successfully completed. Intensive lectures in the mornings by experts in the field were followed by hands-on microscope training in the afternoons. Tours to microscope companies in Tokyo were organized for providing a feel of connectivity of science to technology, and were thoroughly appreciated at all ends including organizers, trainees and industries.

DAILAB-SISTERs

DAILAB SISTERS DAILAB has initiated SISTER (Satellite Institutes for Special Training Education and Research) labs to further promote joint research and training programs. First SISTER DAILAB was launched at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-Delhi) on November 04, 2015 by Dr. Renu Swarup, Senior Adviser, Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, in the presence of Prof. R. Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Advisor to Govt. of India and AIST delegation. Subsequently, SISTER Labs at RCB, Faridabad; USJP, Sri Lanka; Manipal University, India and SIKKIM University, India have been established. The SISTER Labs are cooperating for cutting edge research on the field of biomedicine and biotechnology and widening the scope of bridging basic research to application by involvement of industry at each end.
