Research

Our group investigates material characteristics using positron beams. By studying the gamma radiation emitted when the positrons are annihilated in the sample it is possible to learn about the size and distribution of defects and/or free volume regions. For more information about the various experimental methods please click here.

Facilities

Linear Electron Accelerator (LINAC)

We use the AIST LINAC and produce positrons via collisions of energetic electrons (70 MeV) with a solid target. The fast positrons produced are slowed to eV energies by a tungsten moderator and formed into a beam.

Compact Radioisotope based

Our group has also developed a radioisotope (Na-22) based pulsed variable energy apperatus. A compact, high specification device for PALS measurement is now available commercially from the Fuji Imvac Inc.
