What is "UserModeLinux for KNOPPIX on Self-certifying File System"?

　Seamless KNOPPIX migration environment which uses Secure file system "Self-certifying File System（SFS）". It enables us to boot UML-KNOPPIX from Web browser.
　Cloop files and scripts to boot UML-KNOPPIX are put on SFS sites. We can try "UML-KNOPPIX" from Web browser (Ex: Konqueror) with click only. We don't need to download large iso file. We can make large cloop file without worrying about CD size. We don't need to burn a CD-ROM.
　KNOPPIX Japanese Edition has installed and set-up UML-KNOPPIX and SFS. You can boot other KNOPPIXs from Web browser with click only.

What is "Self Certifying File System(SFS)"?

　Secure File System which is developed by David Mazi鑽es. SFS is a remote file system which uses NFS protocol on ssh2 protocol.The directory path of SFS includes public encryption key and enable to "authenticate" and "access" to SFS server simultaneously. We don't need to execute explicit "mount" operation as a super user.

    2. Your connection is monitored to get experimental data. The purpose is to check the usage.
    3. Please use this site only for UML-KNOPPIX. Don't download contents from this site to save Band width for UML-KNOPPIX. The same contents can be download form following FTP site.
    4. UML-KNOPPIX uses private network(10.0.0.0/24). Please confirm to avoid the network.
    5. SFS HOSTID opened at home page is changed periodically.
       1. It is a kind of security.
       2. It is a kind of access limitation because we can not estimate usage.
       3. The period may be 1 hour. The HOSTID will be affective 1 hour after the change of HOSTID at HP.
       4. Please use the newest HOSTID from HP without cache.
    6. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO THESE CONDITIONS, YOU ARE NOT PERMITTED TO USE THIS SERVICE..

Usage by figure example

Please download KNOPPIX Japanese Edition iso file and make a CD. Please use the FTP sites.
The current recommended version is knoppix_20031119-20040202.iso.
Please boot with the CD and follow the following steps.

1. Open http://unit.aist.go.jp/it/knoppix/uml/sfs/index-en.html (this HP) with Web Browser (Konqueror). Read carefully and click "GOTO SITE-LIST".
   • 
2. Jump to Site list HP. Please select one and click it. (current service AIST only)
   • CAUTION: It may take time to jump to SFS. Please wait.
   • 
3. Security waring will be appear. Click "Follow" at your risk. You jump to SFS directory.
   • CAUTION: You may get warning messgse after click. At that time, please select SFS site　and click again.
   • 
4. There are some script to run UML-KNOPPIX. "*jp" means Japanese "en" means English. Unforunately some scripts can not understand language differnce.
   • 
5. You can watch "runuml" window. The window shows the boot sequense.
   • 
6. KDE will appear as a desktop manager with Warninig message. This message does not mean on UML. Please click "Close"
   • 
7. You can use anther KNOPPIX on UML. Some applications which depend on hard devices do not work well. (Ex: Blender)

8. You can run some instances of UML-KNOPPIX.

Performance

• We measure boot time of Desktop Manager(KDE,XFce,icewm,twm,fluxbox) of UML-KNOPPIX on SFS.
  • Machine Environment
    • Server Machine for SFS: Dell PowerEdge 600s (Pentium 2.4GHz, 4G RAM, 1GEther)
    • Client Machine for UML: Dell PowerEdge 600s (Pentium 2.4GHz, 4G RAM, 1GEther)
    • Network Environment: via Switching HUB (I/O-data ETG-SH8)
  • How to measure
    • tcpdump of "port 4" sent data on server machine.
