As one of the central research units engaged in geological studies at AIST, the Institute of Geology and Geoinformation aims to address various needs throughout society by conducting research in the areas described below. In each area, the Institute aims to collect and organize geological data on Japan’s national territory and surrounding oceans, in order to provide predictions based on solid science.

Currently, the Institute has established five main projects, and is promoting a strong leadership program using a matrix method that spans across several research groups.
