The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Hokkaido Center (AIST Hokkaido), is a Research and Development facility which operates two research laboratories: the "Bioproduction Research Institute" and the "Methane Hydrate Research Center".
The Bioproduction Research Institute is advancing the development of mass production bioprocesses to produce value-added organic material such as protein by using genetically modified plants and microbes. It is also committed to the basic technological establishment of various proteins used in industry.
The Methane Hydrate Research Center is conducting research on mehtane hydrate, developing a technology for producing natural gas as a future energy resource.
AIST Hokkaido combines advanced technological facilities with highly skilled researchers to spearhead a unique bio-venture incubation project. In addition we are working, in association with vocational colleges, to educate bio-technicians in order to meet demand from a new bio-industry which shows remarkable growth.
Furthermore, to offer support to AIST's entire network of research laboratories, AIST Hokkaido is actively working to dispatch AIST technology seeds, and also to find and understand the technological needs of the local area. We are affiliated with public research institutions, universities, business groups, and the civil service and have started a high quality information and technical support system. One such support system is the "Research and Business Park Odori Satellite Office" which works to provide information and technology development support. We are devoted to the development of local industrial business activities in collaboration with industry, academia and goverment.
AIST Hokkaido will function as a substantial research center capable of world-class research achievement. We will make a continuing effort to contribute to society, both regional and global, as a core research institute in Hokkaido.
